Kathmandu, Sept 24: Nepal’s total outstanding public debt has reached Rs 2.973 trillion, according to the Public Debt Management Office.
By the end of Bhadra, the government’s outstanding debt stood at Rs 2.973 trillion and exceeded 45 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).
Of the total debt, Rs 1.361 trillion is domestic debt, while Rs 1.611 trillion is external debt. Domestic debt accounts for 20.63 percent of GDP, while external debt accounts for 24.41 percent.
The government has set a target of mobilizing Rs 658.28 billion in public debt during the current fiscal year. By the end of Bhadra, it had already raised Rs 61.05 billion, equivalent to 9.28 percent of the annual target.
The government plans to raise Rs 410 billion through domestic borrowing and Rs 248.28 billion through external borrowing this fiscal year. By the end of Bhadra, Rs 50 billion had been raised domestically and Rs 11.05 billion through external borrowing.
The government has also allocated Rs 417.88 billion for repayment of public debt principal and interest during the current fiscal year. Of this amount, Rs 85.10 billion had been paid by the end of Bhadra, representing 20.34 percent of the annual allocation.
Debt servicing during the period amounted to 1.29 percent of the country’s GDP.
