Kathmandu, Sept. 22: The Ministry of Internal Affairs, Law and Cooperatives of Bagmati Province has urged residents to remain highly alert as heavy rainfall is forecast in various parts of the province from September 25 to 27.
Issuing a public notice on Tuesday, the ministry urged residents to take necessary precautions and make adequate preparations in view of possible weather-related risks.
According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, various parts of Bagmati Province are likely to experience heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds during the period.
The ministry warned that heavy rain could raise water levels in rivers and streams and trigger flash floods, landslides and inundation.
Road and air transportation could also be affected by the rainfall. The ministry has advised people to check road and weather conditions before travelling.
Residents living along rivers and streams, in landslide-prone areas, on steep slopes and in areas vulnerable to flooding have been urged to exercise extra caution.
People have been advised to move to nearby safe locations promptly if signs of danger emerge and to coordinate with local authorities and security agencies.
The ministry has also advised against long-distance and nighttime travel except in emergencies. It urged people to pay special attention to the safety of children, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, pregnant women and sick people.
Residents have been asked to keep livestock, food, medicines, important documents and other essential items in safe places.
Provincial government agencies, local governments, security agencies, volunteers and other stakeholders have been directed to remain on alert with necessary preparations.
They have also been instructed to make arrangements for the timely evacuation of people at risk to safer locations when necessary.
The ministry urged residents to regularly follow official forecasts, early warnings and alerts issued by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the federal government, provincial government, local authorities and security agencies, and to follow instructions issued by the concerned authorities.
