‘एक चिहान’ मा आधारित नाटक
Kathmandu, September 29
The theatrical adaptation of Ek Chihan, a celebrated novel by distinguished author and essayist Hridayachandra Singh Pradhan, is set to be staged at Kantipur Theater in Gairidhara, Kathmandu, from Ashoj 16 to 25 (October 2 to 11).
During a press conference organized today to share details regarding the performance, the organizers announced that the play will run for 10 days, with daily shows at 5:00 PM and an additional matinee show at 2:00 PM on holidays.
According to the organizers, as Ek Chihan is included in the Grade 12 Nepali curriculum, the staging serves as a particularly beneficial and valuable learning opportunity for students and the younger generation. Experiencing the literary material directly on stage rather than limiting it to textbooks renders the study of literature more dynamic, engaging, and meaningful.
A highly acclaimed, influential, and vibrant work in Nepali literature, Ek Chihan presents a realistic depiction of Nepali society by powerfully highlighting themes of class discrimination, poverty, social superstition, and revolutionary consciousness. Presented by Natya Shala, this timeless literary masterpiece has been adapted for the stage.
Play director Nakul Paudel shared that before arriving in Kathmandu, the play achieved a successful milestone of 90 performances across several major cities, including Kohalpur, Butwal, Chitwan, Hetauda, and Surkhet.
Director Paudel noted that compared to cinema or other forms of entertainment, theater culture remains relatively overshadowed in Nepali society. He explained that the objectives of this production are to attract students and youth to the theater, preserve and promote theatrical culture, and transform theoretical classroom learning into a practical, live experience by allowing students to see their curriculum come to life on stage.
He further claimed that the play goes beyond traditional staging methods, offering a deeply research-oriented and experimental approach to the psychology of the characters and their social environment.
The adaptation and direction of the novel Ek Chihan have been done by Nakul Paudel, with Miron Paudel serving as co-director and Manoj Tamang managing the production.
The ensemble cast includes Miron Paudel (Dr. Godatta Prasad), Puja Tamang (Nanithaku), Gopal Mahatara (Shivanaran), Shakti Paudel (Pun Naran), Bipana Thing (Sintali), Pushpendra Khadka (Ashthanaran), Kushal Baskota (Rambahadur), Rupa Thapa (Latamaya), Sanjaya Bishwakarma (Ratnaman), Saras Dahal (Hakumaya), Ayushma Gurung (Ranjanadevi), Bishal Karki (Harshanaran), and Diwas Neupane (Ram Khelawan).
Presented by Natya Shala, the staging of Ek Chihan is not merely the performance of a literary work, but a significant milestone for Nepali theater.
Unified Nepal.
