NEW YORK, October 3.
Expectations that the US Federal Reserve will refrain from immediately raising interest rates have grown following weaker-than-expected US employment data. Consequently, US stock markets registered gains on Friday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 250 points, or 0.49 percent, to close at 51,176 points. The S&P 500 index increased by 0.7 percent to reach 7,722 points, while the Nasdaq Composite index climbed 1.19 percent to close at 27,190 points.
According to US labor statistics, only 29,000 non-farm jobs were added in September, falling significantly short of expectations. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate increased to 4.2 percent.
Following the weak employment data, market analysts noted an increased likelihood that the US central bank will hold interest rates steady during its October meeting, boosting investor sentiment.
Meanwhile, international oil prices declined. Following an agreement to release a significant quantity of oil and diesel from emergency reserves into the market, US crude oil prices dropped to $91.11 per barrel.
In corporate developments, Nike’s share price fell by approximately 3.6 percent following lower-than-expected revenue figures. Conversely, Tesla’s share price surged by 4.65 percent. Shares of Nvidia, AMD, and several other technology companies also reached near-record highs.
