Kathmandu | July 7 — Employment remains a top priority for Nepal’s Generation Z, but recent studies and discussions highlighted by Nepali media indicate that young people are increasingly seeking more than secure jobs. Better governance, entrepreneurship, digital opportunities, quality education and a greater role in public decision-making are emerging as defining aspirations of the country’s youngest adult generation.
A recent study on Nepal’s Gen Z found that many young Nepalis continue to express confidence in democracy while calling for cleaner politics, stronger public institutions and leadership that places merit and accountability above patronage. The findings also show growing expectations for reforms that create opportunities within Nepal and reduce the need for labour migration.
Employment continues to dominate youth concerns, with many graduates seeking careers in technology, innovation, entrepreneurship and the digital economy. At the same time, demand for skill-based education, startup support and easier access to finance has grown as more young people consider self-employment and business creation as viable career paths.
Recent public discussions have also highlighted Gen Z’s increasing engagement in national affairs through digital platforms, volunteer initiatives and civic participation. Analysts note that young people are placing greater emphasis on transparency, efficient public services and evidence-based policymaking, reflecting changing expectations from state institutions.
With nearly one-third of Nepal’s population falling within the youth age group, policymakers and development experts say addressing the aspirations of Gen Z will play a crucial role in shaping the country’s future workforce, innovation ecosystem and long-term economic growth. As Nepal continues its demographic transition, creating opportunities at home is increasingly viewed as central to retaining talent and unlocking the potential of a new generation.
