Kathmandu, Ashoj 9: Books from nearly two dozen publishing houses have been put on display at the grand book exhibition organized by the Nepal Academy starts today.
Inaugurating the exhibition, Academy Vice-Chancellor Abinash Shrestha expressed his belief that the event will contribute to the development of human consciousness. He informed that although preparations were initially made to hold the exhibition on the Academy premises, due to rain, it will be held for the next few days in the Bhanubhakta Exhibition Hall. Once the rain stops, the exhibition will resume on the open premises, where private publishing houses will also set up their stalls to continue the event.
The Academy has organized this grand exhibition—running from today until Ashoj 18—to promote books related to the Nepali language, literature, art, culture, philosophy, and science and knowledge. Naveen Abhilashi, a member of the Academic Council, told RSS that major publishing houses of Nepal applied to participate. He highlighted that this is the first time the Academy is organizing a book exhibition involving private publishing houses alongside government ones.
He further noted that stalls for books from almost all government publications, including Sajha Prakashan, will be present. Government-affiliated publications such as the Nepal Academy of Fine Arts, the Nepal Academy of Music and Drama, and the National Archives are also featured in the exhibition.
Organized at the Academy premises in Kamaladi with the objective of developing a reading culture and strengthening the relationship between readers and publishers, the Grand Book Exhibition-2083 runs from today until Ashoj 18. He explained that although the exhibition was previously scheduled for Ashoj 12 to 23, it was rescheduled due to special circumstances. Books published by the Nepal Academy are being offered at discounts of up to 40%.
Additionally, books from the Nepal Academy of Fine Arts are being sold at discounts of up to 50%. The exhibition stalls prioritize books on Nepali language, literature, art, culture, history, philosophy, sociology, children’s literature, folk literature, and other informative and creative genres. Participating publishing houses and organizations have been provided free stalls based on criteria and availability set by the organizers, with a rule requiring them to maintain their stalls throughout the entire exhibition period.
Furthermore, participating publishers and organizations are required to manage all necessary arrangements independently, including stall and venue management, book display, sales and distribution, cleanliness, and security. (RSS)
