WEST, October 1
Member of the House of Representatives, Dr. Anand Bahadur Chand, has urged authorities to finalize preparations to commence medical and health sciences classes at the Shahid Dasharath Chand University of Health Sciences in Geta starting from the current academic session.
Expressing satisfaction following a recent site inspection by a Medical Education Commission team to assess academic readiness, MP Dr. Chand noted that operating the university is a long-cherished desire of the residents of Sudurpashchim Province. He urged all technical issues to be resolved immediately to move the process forward.
Addressing public inquiries and concerns regarding the university’s departments, teaching hospital, laboratories, and other educational infrastructure, Dr. Chand emphasized that these questions should not be dismissed as mere opposition. Instead, he stressed that they must be addressed with facts, evidence, and a clear, structured action plan.
Highlighting Geta as a decades-long dream for Sudurpashchim, a major state investment, and a nationally important institution tied to the health education of future generations, he noted that its launch must be built on quality, transparency, and public trust.
Dr. Chand recommended that the university administration publicly share details with a defined timeline, including:
- Appointments and member details across each department.
- Available specialist services and patient status at the teaching hospital.
- Clinical exposure opportunities for students.
- The current state of laboratories, equipment, library, hostels, and research infrastructure.
Additionally, he requested clear operational guidelines and legal frameworks for any hospital collaborations, along with a firm timeline for expanding the existing facility into a full-capacity teaching hospital.
To ensure systematic progress, Dr. Chand proposed a time-bound action plan spanning 15 days to one year:
- Within 15 days: Publicly release factual details regarding departments, hospital services, laboratories, equipment, and existing infrastructure.
- Within 1 month: Identify gaps in departmental manpower, procurement, and educational infrastructure, and release an action plan.
- Within 3 months: Initiate the recruitment of departmental members, establish laboratory and equipment management, and arrange clinical teaching systems.
- Within 6 months: Complete the first phase of expanding hospital services, specialist staff, diagnostic capacities, and clinical departments.
- Within 12 months: Achieve target goals for expanded teaching hospital capacity, required personnel, and key academic structures, while publishing progress reports every three months.
“Where there is confusion, let us provide facts; where there are weaknesses, let us make improvements; and where preparations are complete, let us inform the public with evidence,” Dr. Chand stated. He added that launching MBBS programs at Geta is not merely about starting a health education curriculum, but is deeply linked to Sudurpashchim’s healthcare services, employment, research, regional development, and the future of its youth. Thus, it must be successfully realized through transparency, quality, and shared responsibility.
Discussions regarding the university’s operation have intensified across various quarters following the Medical Education Commission’s inspection.
